Agree about the personal choice and I wish it were that simple. However, many times a "personal freedom" of one person takes hard earned money out of the pocket of another. If you went down without a helmet and ended up brain dead your insurance might have to pay for 10 times what they would have if you had been wearing a helmet.
That in turn affects my insurance rates and the rates of thousands of others. This is the same argument that's used for seat belts - and even if it does sound bizarre not many people can look at the raw data and deny that it's true.
I guess the moral of the sory is "live free" but not on my nickel...
